If you register with TomTom and try an update, you will soon get to know if its been stolen. Hi Folks Really REALLY displeased and annoyed and feel that I've been conned. I have a 1 year-old TomTom Go 520 but it seems that the only way to update the device is through the device itself and over WiFi. This is DOG SLOW. I have a pretty poor internet connection it has to be said (3.2 mbps) but downloading ANY update takes HOURS. ![]() Yes, the router has the latest firmware Is there any other way to update this device other than rely on the pathetic WiFi connection? I had an old Go 520 (the square-ish one from 2006) but I could update that through the PC and TomTom 'Home'. This newer device uses TomTom 'My Drive Connect' - except you can't seem to download a new map from a valid TomTom account through that program and then download it to the device/memory card. Good God TomTom, we are nearly 20% of the way through the 21st century and yet downloading the updates for my device is taking me back to the huge waiting times when large files were downloaded via dial-up. Isn't there any more efficient way of downloading these updates than the rather convoluted process that they seem to have designed into the device/system. Currently 16:57, the device is reporting 6% downloaded and moved there from 5% at 16:51 - so six minutes for a 1% change in the data download. This is SIMPLY. ENOUGH Any help gratefully received. Hi The NAV5 (Wi-Fi) devices like you’re Go520 update using Wi-Fi. All the update actions are executed on the device. (1) Connected Wifi Tap the 4Dot(. Menu) --> Setting --> Updates & New Items Extra Maps are Installed/Maintained. ![]() ![]() Setting --> Maps Note. NAV(5 Wifi) devices connected over Wifi do not require MyDrive Connect to be running Even if myDrive is running you have no access the MyDrive Connect menu structures as used by the previous NAV3 & 4 devices ______________________________ Option. (2) Connected USB If Wi-Fi is not available or is slow/unstable/unreliable. Updating your new NAV5 (Wi-Fi) device over USB will require 'MyDrive Connect' Get it here. With Your PC/Laptop hardwired to your router Run MyDrive Connect. The NAV(5 Wifi) devices have no access the MyDrive Menu structures as used by the previous NAV3 & 4 devices MyDrive Connect will only show a 'Splash screen' saying 'Connect your device using Wifi' etc If required You can close the 'Main Mydrive Window' showing the 'Connect your device using Wifi' Splash screen. MyDrive Connect only needs to run in the background on the PC TaskBar Connect your Device to a USB Port on your PC Updating a NAV5 (Wi-Fi) device using USB is the same as using Wi-Fi, all of the update actions are executed on the device. Tap the 4Dot(. Menu) --> Setting --> Updates & New Items Extra Maps are Installed/Maintained. Setting --> Maps ATB YFM. Hi YamFazMan Thanks for your reply. This is why I feel conned - I am forced to use some software (whatever) in the device and is is really, REALLY DOG SLOW. The device offered me six updates this evening, and I opted to download just three - the OS, the GB and Ireland Map and the Traffic Cameras. As reported in my earlier post, the download of these three items was at 5% at 16:51 this afternoon. It is now 19:27 - some 2h 36min later, and the download progress is only up to 39%. 18% of the way through the 21st century, this is totally unacceptable. Is it possible that the device that I have is faulty in some way, or is TomTom's software (and/or servers) really this poor?? This whole Sat-Nav thing really annoys. You get a car with Sat-Nav factory-fitted (both of our cars have integrated Sat-Nav) and have to pay HUGE amounts to the car manufacturer to keep them updated. Or You buy a self-contained Sat-Nav (e.g. In our case, a Garmin Nuvi) only to find that it is totally unusable within a year as the battery won't hold a charge and the unit won't even run on a DC supply without a 'good' battery. Or You buy a TomTom (because your last unit, whilst old and with a small screen, just worked) and get something where the software has been 'improved' and it is an absolute dog! No wonder folks are giving up on units like the Go 520 and using Google Maps on their smartphones! [Snip] I'm uploading the poi file and its taking it but when i search for any of the places they,re not there??So its like its taking the file but only some of it. To make it clearer its my work places I've been to 734 of them added over years, its a 32kb.ovi file so not big but when i search for various places only some will appear, for example parking-nothing and i know there's about 50 on there. [snip] Whats an ovi file??? Your 520 pro uses.Ov2 files Some.Ov2 files created using the early Tomtom devices appear to use a different format for the file header??? Loading the file into an online POI Editor and saving the file back to your computer appears to fix the problem Try.. YamFazMan wrote: Hi In reality It's NOT the GO 520 that's at Fault. Its your internet connection that's really, REALLY DOG SLOW My Hard wired Internet connection is 55Mbs. The Europe Map is 7GB + My GO 520 will install the Full Europe map over USB in around 25 Minutes ATB YFM Hi YamFazMan I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Enable flash firefox ubuntu. It is the interface/software in the TomTom that is a problem. If I can download a HD movie in a few minutes or stream Netflix/Amazon Prime/iPlayer without a problem, but a 10GB update on the TomTom takes around eight hours, it is something in the 520 hardware or software where the problem lies, not my 3Mbps internet connection. I would love to try a 30-100Mbps internet connection but where we are we have the option of b/band over copper or VM fibre. We have tried VM and when we had a connection, it was fast - but the important part of that statement was ' when we had a connection'. VM's connection was less reliable than Russell Grant is at correctly forecasting the winning lottery numbers, so we are consigned to the choice of b/band over POTS (slow and reliable) or VM Fibre (fast and unreliable). One more choice than Hobson had, but hardly much better! I am VERY disappointed that a 'more sophicticated' and 'up-to-date' model of sat-nav is far, far slower than a 10 year-old device from the same company as far as updating maps is concerned. My old Go 520 would update through TomTom Home - the files being downloaded to the pc and saved to the SD card to be then inserted into the sat-nav.
